WHAT IS A PASSPORT?
It is a
document issued by the country’s relevant authority to its citizen for
the purpose of facilitating his/her movement across boundaries subject
to laws and regulations of the country of destination or transit.
Despite being issued in the name and other particulars of the bearer, it
remains a property of the government.
TYPES OF PASSPORTS AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
- Ordinary passports
- Service passports Diplomatic Passports
- East African Passports
- Emergency Travel Document
- Certificate of Identity
- Geneva Convention Travel Document
PEROSNS ENTITLED TO PASSPORT OR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
- An
ordinary passport may be issued to any citizen of the United Republic
of Tanzania for a purpose of travelling to outside the United Republic
- A
service passport may be issued to any citizen of the United Republic of
Tanzania who is in the public service or is holding office as
respectively specified…..
- A Diplomatic passport may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic specified in the third schedule
- An
East African Passport may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic
who intends to travel within the East African Community member states.
- An Emergency Travel Document may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic
- who is travelling on an Emergency journey and does not fulfil the normal requirements of getting a passport.
- Who is stranded abroad and cannot get a passport or is being deported back home.
- A
certificate of Identity may be issued to a person other than a citizen
of the \united Republic of Tanzania who cannot obtain a passport from
the country of which he is a citizen or does not have citizenship of an y
country for the purpose of travelling out side The United Republic of
Tanzania.
PROCEDURES FOR APPLICATION AND ISSUANCE OF NEW PASSPORTS.
Application
for a new passport is lodged by the applicant at the Immigration
Headquarters, Zanzibar and any Regional or District Immigration office
where the applicant resides.
DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED TO SUPPORT APPLICATION FOR A NEW PASSPORT
Any application for a passport shall be accompanied by:
- A birth certificate or an affidavit of birth or certificate of naturalization of the applicant.
- A birth certificate or an affidavit of birth or certificate of naturalization of the applicant’s parent or parents.
- Recent, clear and
- Un-mounted passport size photographs as may be directed by the issuing authority.
- In case of the applicant who is below the age of 16 years, the parent’s or legal guardian’s written consent.
OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS BASED ON THE NATURE OF THE TRIP ARE AS INDICATED HEREUNDER:
1. PRIVATE TRIP
The application for private trip shall be accompanied by:
- Proof of applicant’s activities
- Invitation letter
- Return ticket
- Permission letter from the parent or guardian if the parent is below 18 years of age.
- Permission letter from the employer if the applicant is employed.
- Letter from the Ward Executive Officer/Sheha, where the applicant resides
2. EMPLOYMENT TRIPS
The application for employment trips shall be accompanied by:
- Offer of employment
- Return ticket
- Letter from Ward Executive Officer/Sheha where the applicant resides.
3. STUDY TRIPS
The application for the study trips shall be accompanied by
- Admission letter
- Academic certificates
- Sponsorship letter
- Proof of payment for private sponsorship
- Permission letter from the employer if the applicant is employed.
- Permission letter from the parents or guardian if if the applicant is below 18 years of age.
4. RELIGIOUS TRIPS
The application for religious trips shall be accompanied by:
- Invitation letter
- A letter from a designated registered religious organization responsible for the trip.
5. MEDICAL TREATMENT
The application for medical treatment trips shall be accompanied by:
- A letter from the Principal Medical Officer
- Proof from a registered Medical Officer
- A letter of authority from the Ministry of Health.
6. SPORTS TRIPS
The application for sports trips shall be accompanied by:
- A letter from the Tanzania Football Association (FAT) or the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) or
- A letter from a registered Sports Association.
- Invitation letter.
7. SCOUTS TRIPS
The application shall be accompanied by:
- A letter from the relevant Scouts Association
- Permission letter from the parent or guardian if the applicant is is below the age of 18.
- Invitation letter 8.
OFFICIAL TRIPS
The application shall be accompanied by:
- A letter from the employer
- Invitation letter
- Identity card of the applicant
8. BUSINESS TRIPS
The application shall be accompanied by:
- A valid business licence
- Return ticket
9. SEAMAN TRIP
The application shall be accompanied by:
- Contract of employment
- Seaman discharge book
- Letter from a relevant Seaman Union.
APPLICATION FOR REPLACEMENT OF PASSPORT.
Where
a holder’s passport is lost, stolen or severely damaged an application
for replacement shall be accompanied by sworn declaration of the
circumstances surrounding the loss, theft or damage of the passport and
authority to which the loss, theft or damage was reported.
REVECATION OF PASSPORTS AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS.
The
Commissioner of Immigration Services at any time can revoke the
passport or travel documents granted or issued to the holder if:-
- The holder of a passport permits another person to use his/her passport.
- The holder of a passport has been deported or repatriated to the United Republic of Tanzania at the expense of the Government.
- The holder has ceased to be a citizen of United Republic of Tanzania.
- The
holder engages in illicit drug trafficking, money laundering, migrant
trafficking, terrorist act or any other illegal transaction.
- It is in national interest or national security.
